Henry Smith MP has welcomed the launch of a Department for Business, Innovation & Skills investigation into abuse of tipping in restaurants, as part of the Government’s commitment to dealing with tipping abuse.
Henry said;
“I’m pleased to back the Government’s consultation into the payment of tips and service charges.
“The Business Secretary, Sajid Javid, is right to say that when you leave a tip you expect it to fully go to the member of staff that served you. I’m pleased that the Government are standing up for restaurant staff by investigating this issue with a public consultation.
"This is an important issue locally as many in Crawley work in the hospitality industry.
“Last year I supported a bill which would see the law changed to guarantee workers access to tips and service charges, and staff would be left to decide how these would be distributed.”
The consultation is open until 10th November 2015, and people are able to respond in the following ways:
- Web, by: answering the questions on the online form
- Web, by: completing the online survey
- Email, via: [email protected]
- Post, to: Labour Market Directorate, Department for Business Innovation and Skills, 1 Victoria Street, London SW1A 0ET
The Government’s call for evidence will look at how restaurants treat tips left by customers, and whether intervention is necessary to in order to strengthen the voluntary code of practice run by the industry.
The inquiry which will seek information and views from those in the hospitality industry, as well as other stakeholders, and will consider whether there should be a cap on the proportion of tips restaurants can withhold from staff for administrative costs and, if so, what this level should be.
Henry continued;
“I would of course be interested to hear from anyone in Crawley on this issue. If you are making a submission or have a view on this matter please do write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA, or email me at: [email protected]”
