Henry Smith MP met volunteers, staff and puppies from the charity Guide Dogs last week in Parliament, and thanked them for their work over this last year.
Guide Dogs also gave Henry a custom-made Christmas cracker, which he pulled with James White, the charity’s Campaigns Manager.
Henry said;
“It was a pleasure to meet the guide dog pups in training and receive my thank you cracker from Guide Dogs.
“Pavement parking is a real problem in Crawley. As well as for people with sight loss, it is a potentially dangerous obstacle for wheelchair and mobility scooter users as well as people with pushchairs.”
Henry is supporting an attempt to change the law to give local councils more power to tackle the problem of parking on pavements, which is a hazard for people with sight loss and can force them onto the road.
The charity set up a makeshift grotto in Parliament, and handed out messages of thanks to MPs that have supported the charity in 2014. The custom cracker included messages from residents of Crawley on Guide Dogs’ campaign for a national law on pavement parking.
Henry continued;
“I am grateful to Guide Dogs for passing me the details of a number of their supporters in our town – I have contacted them directly to let them know of my continued support for the charity and the many worthy issues it campaigns on.”
James White, Campaigns Manager at Guide Dogs, commented;
“We are very grateful for all of the support that Members of Parliament give to Guide Dogs.
“As well as saying thank you to Henry for his help this year, we used this opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of parking on pavements and to call for a change in the law.”
