It is hard to come to terms with the loss of Her Majesty The Queen. Reigning for 70 years, she has been the one constant in our lives for the vast majority of us, throughout a time of immense change. Many of us feel a deep sense of loss and this period of national mourning is helping us to process this change at the very heart of our kingdom.
As I wrote when commemorating the Platinum Jubilee, Her Majesty’s place in our hearts isn’t just for her length of her service, incredible as that is, but also for how splendidly she dedicated her life to serving our nation and the realms and Commonwealth. Our Queen was truly unique in the world and when we say goodbye to her, it will be knowing that we will never see a reign like hers again.
One thing that has struck me is how fondly our Queen is remembered around the world. I’ve seen this from both people I know abroad and from people originally from abroad who live here. She transcended cultures, languages and religions - representing the very best of our country. Her contribution to the mostly positive way that our country is viewed abroad cannot be understated.
Last Saturday I felt drawn to visit Buckingham Palace to pay my respects. I noticed many people from Crawley doing the same, seeing families with flowers also getting on the train at Three Bridges. Her Majesty will have meant different special things to each of us, but even among those who aren’t strong supporters of monarchy like I am, she was well-respected for how well she carried out her role and cared for her nation’s people.
On Sunday I was pleased to join with our MP, fellow Councillors and fellow Crawley residents, in seeing Crawley’s Mayor make our local proclamation in announcing the new reign of Charles III. While leading the mourning for his mother, His Majesty The King has started his service to the nation as our monarch and head of state. My colleagues and I wish him a long and glorious reign.
