Henry Smith MP has welcomed figures released which show that in the south east of England, there are 4.6 million people in work – meaning over 408,000 more people have the security of a job since 2010.
In Crawley, the number of people who are claiming key out-of-work benefits has fallen by 1,293 since 2010 – an overall reduction of 48 per cent, meaning fewer people now need this support because they have the security of a job.
The figures show that wages have risen at their fastest pace in over a decade as employment reaches a record high, with more than 32.6 million people currently in work. There is also a record number of disabled people in work; a record low unemployment rate; and a record female employment rate.
Henry said;
“These figures show the balanced approach to the economy is working across all corners of the country. This is the biggest rise in wages for over a decade and there are more people in work than ever before.
“With over 3.5 million more people in work since 2010, it’s this Government which will continue to help people build a better future for themselves and their families.
“Nearly four fifths of jobs created since 2010 are full-time jobs, with just 2.6 per cent of our workforce on zero-hour contracts – a reduction over the last year.
“Through the dignity of work, we’re seeing more and more people across our country being able to reach their full potential.”
Rt Hon Amber Rudd MP, the Work & Pensions Secretary and fellow Sussex MP, added;
“Unemployment has fallen again and wages are rising faster than prices, meaning people’s pay can go further and more people have the security of a regular wage and can provide for their families.
“I’m also proud of the fact there are now a record number of disabled people in work. Everyone, no matter their background or circumstance in life, deserves the opportunity to get a job and earn a living, and we have relentlessly focussed on breaking down barriers to work.”
