As one of Crawley’s most popular pubs is to close for more than a month for redecoration, local MP, Henry Smith has expressed concerns that its historic name will be changed when it reopens in December.
The Frogshole Farm will be closing on 3rd November for upgrade work but when the pub, in Maidenbower Drive, starts serving again on 5th December the proposal is to re-brand it as an Ember Inn.
Henry said:
"I welcome Maidenbower's popular local pub being refurbished but am saddened to learn that when it opens its doors again just before Christmas it may well be under a new name.
"Frogshole Farm house has appeared on local maps for centuries, and along with Maidenbower farm, was a local feature of Worth parish for time out of mind.
"When Crawley's new neighbourhood was planned in the 1980s I can understand why it was called Maidenbower rather than Frogshole after the farms it was built on! I have always thought it appropriate though that as the old house was turned into the local pub, its ancient name remained.
"We should preserve our historical references and so I will be writing to the pub owners as well as Crawley Borough Council, as local licencing authority, to request a re-think."
