Henry Smith MP has backed a Conservative bill in Parliament to change the law with regard to tips and service charges.
Henry said;
“I am pleased to sponsor this bill, brought about by my colleague, Andrew Percy MP. It would see the law changed to guarantee workers access to tips and service charges, and staff would be left to decide how these would be distributed.
“I noted that during the debate, Andrew mentioned a number of restaurant chains that already have such a policy, and I am pleased that some of these already operate in Crawley. However, when you go to a restaurant and leave a tip, you tend to expect it to go to the staff that had served or prepared your meal.”
The Service Charges, Gratuities and Cover Charges (Hospitality, Leisure and Service Sectors) bill would allow ministers to set an absolute maximum an employer could take from a tip or service charge for administration purposes. A period of consultation would be undertaken ahead of a precise figure being set.
Henry continued;
“I recently attended the official opening of a new restaurant in Crawley, and I am pleased to see more and more businesses setting up in our town and employing local people.”
Andrew Percy, Member of Parliament for Brigg and Goole, said;
“I am delighted to have Henry’s support for this change in the law and I thank him for his support. Henry is a powerful advocate for his constituents in the House of Commons and by backing this Bill he is supporting both local workers, and local consumers.”
