Henry Smith MP has reaffirmed his support for the ‘Read on. Get on.’ campaign, following a new report organised by Save the Children.
Henry said:
“Earlier this week I met with Save the Children to discuss the new report, Reading England’s Future.
“It is essential we do more to ensure children from all backgrounds can read well by the age of 11.
“I have written to all primary schools in Crawley to let them know of the report, and I am looking forward to hearing their views.
“This Government has introduced the Pupil Premium, and has seen additional funding attached to the most disadvantaged children, rising to £2.5 billion this year.
“I am pleased to be working with Save the Children to help young people right across our town. Crucial extra support, targeted at the poorest children, creates enormous potential for schools to help those pupils catch up.”
Nicky Morgan MP, Secretary of State for Education, said of the ‘Read On. Get On.’ campaign;
“This brilliant campaign will help us all to make a real difference to the lives of millions of children and I hope that the whole country will get behind it.”
Sir John Major, Prime Minister from 1990 to 1997, also commenting on the campaign, said;
“Ensuring all children are reading well by the age of 11 would represent a huge step towards creating a society where it is the skills and efforts of a child that determine how they succeed in life, not the accident of birth. That is why I am delighted to support the ‘Read On. Get On.’ campaign.”
