Henry Smith MP has praised two locally-based companies on their work, and plans for the future.
Varian Medical Systems recently celebrated their 30th anniversary in Crawley, and Elekta recently unveiled plans for Cornerstone, their new multi-million pound development focusing on the global future of cancer care and treatment.
Henry said;
"I am grateful to the Speaker of the House of Commons for calling me to Prime Minister's Questions.
"I have recently seen Elekta’s plans for cancer care, and visited Varian upon their 30th anniversary here, and was pleased for the chance to publicly tell the Prime Minister about the jobs and opportunities they are creating in Crawley.”
Henry Smith, Member of Parliament for Crawley, asked the Prime Minister;
“Will the Prime Minister join me in congratulating Varian Medical Systems in my constituency on celebrating 30 years of high-quality manufacturing? Will he congratulate Elekta Oncology Systems, too, on its plans to expand significantly in my constituency? Does this not prove that high-quality UK manufacturing is on the rise?”
The Prime Minister, Rt Hon David Cameron MP, responded;
“My hon. Friend makes an important point—that we are seeing a recovery in some of the most important high-skill industries in our country, not least pharmaceuticals, medical services and high-end manufacturing. When we look at the jobs created under this Government, we see that some two thirds are higher-skill jobs rather than lower-skill ones. That is all to the good because we want to rebuild the manufacturing base of our country.”
